Barbell Deadlift
LOADED HINGE · BOTH PATHS
LOADED HINGE · BOTH PATHS
Why it matters · Operator The deadlift is picking the heaviest possible load off the ground with a safe back, which is the most fundamental strength task there is. It builds the entire posterior chain, the grip, and the bracing strength behind every heavy lift, carry, and drag. No movement transfers more directly to moving real weight in the real world.
Why it matters · Longevity Picking heavy things up off the floor is the single most-rehearsed and most-injured task of aging life. Training the deadlift grooves a braced, safe, powerful hinge under load, so the pattern holds when life demands it unexpectedly. Strong glutes and hamstrings are also the best insurance against the low-back pain that sidelines so many older adults.
Form cues
- Bar over the mid-foot, shins close; hinge and grip just outside the legs
- Set the back flat and the lats tight, hips between the knees and the shoulders, chest up
- Take the slack out of the bar, then drive the floor away; the bar drags up the legs
- Stand tall by finishing with the hips, glutes squeezed; do not lean back at the top
- Lower by pushing the hips back first, the bar tracking down the legs; reset each rep
Common errors
- Rounding the lower back to rip the bar off the floor (set the flat back and brace before pulling)
- The hips shooting up first, turning it into a stiff-legged pull (drive with the legs and hips together)
- Jerking the bar from a dead stop without taking out the slack (pull the slack, then go)
Path A scaling Build with moderate loads and higher reps, technique and a flat back before weight. The trap-bar or a dumbbell deadlift are excellent, more forgiving entry points. Reset every rep; never bounce a heavy bar off the floor.
Path B scaling Train the deadlift heavy at low reps, progressing the load in small steps. Because it is so taxing, keep the volume modest and the form pristine; this is one lift where ego costs the most. Cycle tempo and pause work to sharpen the pull off the floor.
